The North Yorkshire village of Eston is in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland and to the east is the neighbouring village of Normanby. Together the two villages joined forces to organise their own race meetings in the latter part of the 1800s. The inaugural meeting was held in May 1866, although the races were of no significance. However, 4 years later a meeting took place on Monday 30th May 1870 which attracted the attention of over 3000 people. The course was in fields between Normanby and Eston, about 5 miles from Middlesbrough. The chief Steward was Mr R Jackson and he ensured the crowd were entertained throughout the afternoon by a packed race card and the Normanby Brass Band between races. The Innkeepers Hunt Stakes was won by Lady Bolton, and the Normanby Hunt Stakes by favourite Carbineer who beat Tom Andrew and Lady Bolton.  However, the afternoon was somewhat marred by the crowd believing that Nancy had been held back by her jockey in the Selling Hunt Stakes. There is no record of any meetings taking place in the future.
